One for LJ

I admit when I was first going over the list this week, I planned on substituting something else for today's food.  Let this be a lesson to me that if I'm in for a penny, I'm in for a pound.

Today is (wait for it, I know you're excited!) National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!  Well, if you're my Dad you're super excited.  If you're the average person, like my initial reaction, you probably thought you'd pass.  Unlike yesterday, I knew what pastrami was.  Scratch that, I knew it was a meat, I had no idea what it was actually composed of.  (If you're interested, wikipedia helped me out here)  And I knew that a hot pastrami sandwich was kind of like a reuben, which I am a HUGE fan of (minus the Thousand Island Dressing) but I didn't think it was really something that Grant and the kiddos would enjoy.  In fact, I figured it'd be a ginormous battle with the kiddos that I really didn't feel like fighting. I was planning on wimping out.

Then I remembered why I've tackled this 'project' so to speak in the first place - to try new things! Can't do that if you don't step outside of your comfort zone every once in awhile.  So I figured I'd compromise.  Hot Pastrami sandwiches all around for the adults and let the kiddos try a piece.  And to make it authentic, there must be french fries, coleslaw and a pickle! (I also learned that a "Rachel" is like a Reuben but with pastrami and coleslaw in place of the corned beef and sauerkraut.  Who knew!)

I expected dinner to be full of a few moans and groans but to my delight (relief) everyone loved the pastrami!  Dad, apparently they really are your grandkids as Noah requested his own pastrami sandwich for lunch tomorrow.

Lesson of the day, if you're going to do something give it 100%!  That being said, I am going to readily admit right now that Friday is Peking Duck day and I just don't think I can swing that one...  But I am working on finding something similar to substitute!  I am determined now to stick this project out to the best of my abilities and think outside the box :)

Until tomorrow...

Hot pastrami, french fries, coleslaw (homemade, of course!) and a pickle to round it off!

A traditional hot pastrami sandwich is on rye bread, with yellow mustard, pastrami and swiss cheese :)
